To be a part of ICTheatre is to be a part of a movement.
Whether you want to enrol on our BA (hons) course, study for a Diploma, join us for masterclasses and workshops or sign up to one of our evening classes, our ethos remains the same. We believe in offering everyone who walks through our doors excellence.
We believe that not only should the quality of our training be of the highest standard, delivered by practitioners with years of experience, but that we should also be facilitators, serving to expand creative thinking, to encourage entrepreneurship, to build confidence, to provide a vibrant, progressive centre for the performing arts.
Our Degree offers people who may not be able to afford to pay the huge fees attached to many performing arts courses, an excellent training. More than this though, we also want to deliver a curriculum that enables students to develop entrepreneurial skills and to expand their knowledge of the industry as a whole.
We are very honest with our students about the difficulties of embarking on a career as a performer. We want them to be able to generate their own work and to be aware of other avenues available to them when not performing.
We have a programme that develops a wide range of skills alongside those of dancing, singing and acting and if we have a student who shows interest in a particular area of the industry, we find placements for them. We also have a very strong focus on mental resilience throughout the course. Students engage in meditation and mindfulness exercises daily.
Our Extended Diploma provides students with the opportunity to develop as performers, improving their skills in acting, dancing, and singing and challenging them to think creatively, to expand their imaginations, to learn more about themselves both as potential artists and as human beings.
This two-year course is highly practical and vocational in its nature, but alongside the practice students are encouraged to reflect on and analyse their experiences, and to extend their knowledge of the way the industry works.
Over the two years of practical and theoretical study, specialist tutors will support and guide the individual towards their future goals. As with the degree programme, there is a strong focus on mental resilience, we want to prepare our students to embrace the challenges ahead, whatever path they might take.
Our Masterclasses and Workshops
We hold regular masterclasses, workshops and short courses led by inspirational and hugely experienced practitioners. Whether you want to explore voicing Shakespeare with a resident voice coach from the RSC, learn Ariel Silks with a circus company, or develop your musical theatre skills with a top West End performer, we facilitate and host a wide range of opportunities to deepen your learning and challenge yourself.
Our degree students choose weekly from a number of one off sessions and short courses to supplement their core training, but we also hold summer schools and holiday workshops, which are open to the wider community.
Evening Classes and Saturday School
We want to provide a centre for the community to enjoy. A Hub where creative people can come together, exchange ideas, network and take part in a variety of courses and activities. These sessions are open to everyone, whatever their level.
We have a community choir, an acting for beginners course for adults, regular Meisner drop in sessions, pole dancing, adult ballet, tap, Jazz and contemporary, as well as a youth group for 15-18 year olds to come together and simply enjoy the experience of developing their acting skills in a supportive and creative atmosphere.
Our Saturday school ICTheatre Academy offers younger people the chance to get involved in dancing, singing and acting. We want to offer a space for professional and non- professionals alike to come in, explore, develop new skills and enjoy the facilities and energy that we are so proud of at ICTheatre.
We believe that our students should be innovators, navigating a whole new artistic and career landscape, one which requires an incredible range of skills, depth of knowledge and courageous vision
We believe that through the performing arts we can learn a host of transferrable skills applicable to every aspect of our lives.
We believe that the creative arts are fundamental to the survival of society; without them the world becomes a darker, colder place.
In our experience, we believe that there are four crucial skills required to become a respected working professional – We will endeavour to ensure that you fulfil your potential in these areas, as well as gain all the insider knowledge you need to succeed:
As well as this, you will gain..
Training: Talent has to be nurtured by professionals working in the industry today. Their experience and knowledge of contemporary practices will inform and develop your natural ability. You’ll be working with some of the best instructors in the country who will provide you with the techniques and skills that we know will get you hired.
Work ethic: You need to be a person that people want to work with and employ. This industry is a very tight network. Successful performers have the ability to read a room, know how to handle themselves, how to be respectful, how to work hard with no complaints and, most importantly, have no ego. Stories, both good and bad, travel quickly and your reputation is built upon how hard you work to perfect your art and how professional you are to work with.
Life skills: The actor’s secret weapons are a strong mind, self-respect and quiet self-confidence. Everyone has a job to do. You are a cog in that wheel and you are as important as everybody else in the industry. Understanding yourself and respecting yourself as your own business is paramount to your future ability to succeed.
These attributes are crucial to your success and they are the rock upon which ICTheatre is built. We are looking forward to meeting you and helping you to break into the industry fully equipped to earn a living and enjoy a long and happy career. We think Brighton is the best city in the UK to be a student and we know you’ll cherish this journey for the rest of your life!
